Kjelland begins to scratch at the possibilities in his bowing analysis of a popular excerpt from Reinhold Glière’s ballet The Red Poppy.

“Glière’s ‘Russian Sailors’ Dance’ is an ideal context in which bowing technique and interpretation can be discussed,” says Kjelland. “Each variation of the theme contains new challenges with regard to style and, correspondingly, bowing technique. The [excerpts] are only suggestions, not rules, because, as with all bowing, final decisions should be a reflection of the interpreter’s musical vision.”
