Bonhams Joins Brooks

An announcement on September 12, 2000, revealed that venerable auctioneers Bonhams and the much younger company Brooks—"two British family enterprises"—were merging. The new, multi-interest international company will now be known as Bonhams & Brooks and will retain headquarters in Knightsbridge, London (Bonham's established home). The merger combines the traditions of Bonhams, which was established in 1793, with the powerful sales developed by Brooks since its creation in 1989. Bonhams & Brooks declares that there was very little overlap in the companies' business, and that the merger will not affect future sale schedules.

Early Autumn Sales

Phillips held a sale in London on September 11, 2000. The auction brought some extremely high prices on instruments. A violin labeled Johannes Franciscus Pressenda (circa 1890, School of Italy), sold for £45,000 ($65,325). Also of note, a violin (circa 1880, School of Naples) brought £6,200 ($8,999).

A Bonhams & Brooks sale took place in London on September 27, shortly after the merger announcement (see above). Highlights from the sale include an interesting violin, circa 1890, unlabelled, and bearing the W.E. Hill & Son logo on the fingerboard, which brought £2,600 ($3,770, including premium); a cello by Mathias Neuner, of Mittenwald, which garnered £2,400 ($3,480); and a good silver-mounted viola bow by W.E. Hill & Sons that brought £700 ($2,610).

Sotheby's held its first U.S. instrument sale since 1986 in Chicago, on October 6, 2000. The auction went well, bringing nine record sales. Says Director of Musical Instruments Tim Ingles, "Chicago has been very much at the forefront of the growth in the market for fine violins and bows over the last 20 years, and I am delighted that Sotheby's Musical Instruments [department] will now have a presence there. I was delighted with the way the sale performed; we had some very high-quality instruments and bows, and it is great to see that these items continue to break records.

"For me the highlight was the [Pierre] Simon," Ingles continues. Lot 64, it sold for £2,6264 [$3,8125] (before premium). "I thought we had done pretty well selling a gold-and-tortoiseshell Simon for £15,000 [$22,500] in London in July, but this was truly exciting. I just love it when we set records for the same thing in consecutive sales (we did the same for Nicolò Gagliano violins in March and June 1999). It just proves how strong the market is at the moment for really great stuff."

The "ex-Parera" Stradivari of 1679 was another record sale. One of only three known instruments from that year, it had not seen the auction market for 123 years (it sold for £70,000 [$100,400].) "It was great fun holding a sale in Chicago," concludes Ingles. "We were very well received by the local violin community, and given that it was such a success, I certainly intend to do it again next year."
