Auction News Fall Flurry Complete auction results can be found on pages 122–128. Due to space restrictions the two later auctions (Christie’s and Sothebey’s) will be included in the following issue of Strings. Bonhams & Brooks hosted a fine musical instruments auction in Knightsbridge on November 13, 2000, that included several very high sales. An "important" violin by Joseph Rocca (Turin, 1851), sold for £132,250 ($189,118; all prices listed here include premium). The violin was originally purchased from W.E. Hill & Sons in 1920 by George Hern. A French cello made by William Forster (London, 1790) garnered £11,500 ($16,455). Also notable was a very fine silver-mounted viola bow made by Paul Simon in Paris in 1850 weighing 16 grams, which brought £9,775 ($13,978). Christie’s South Kensington offices hosted a fine musical instrument sale on November 15. The auction included a number of interesting sales; of note was an undated gold-and-ivory-mounted violin bow by W.E. Hill & Sons, which sold for £4,930 ($7,050). A Cremonese cello attributed to Lorenzo Storioni and dated 1778 brought a high bid of £56,470 ($80,750) at the auction; and a cello by Enrico Marchetti, circa 1912, sold for £36,975 ($52,875). Phillips held its autumn auction in London on November 13. The sale was broadcast for the first time live on-line. Pictures and descriptions of each lot appeared on the Internet just as the piece was auctioned in the salesroom, and preregistered bidders placed bids from their computers in real time. A top seller was a Carlo Giuseppe Testore violin (in immediate playing condition, sold with case, cover, and bow), which sold for £26,450 ($37,824). Other interesting lots included a good English cello by Thomas Kennedy with some old restoration work, which sold for £13,800 ($19,734), and an 1858 viola attributed to Giuseppe Rocca, which was sold for the same price. A silver-mounted violin bow by Eugene Sartory (61 grams) garnered £7,130 ($10,196). Several record sales were achieved at Skinner’s fall auction of fine instruments on November 9, in Boston. A "fine and rare" Italian violin made by Girolamo and Antonio Amati in Cremona in 1608 made a record sale of $108,100. Another record price was garnered by a Gaetano Pollastri violin from 1935, which sold for $33,350. A silver-mounted viola bow by J.B. Vuillaume, dated 1845, sold for a high bid of $18,400. It weighed 69 grams and featured a round stick, an ebony frog, and a silver-and-ebony adjuster. Sotheby’s held a fine instrument auction on November 14 in London. Notable sales included a Pierre Simon silver-mounted cello bow (dated 1860; weight 81 grams) featuring a round stick, ebony frog with pearl eyes, and a silver banded adjuster. It sold for £4,200 ($6,006). Also a cello by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume dated 1847 (back length 29 inches), brought £91,500 ($130,845). Sotheby’s held its early musical instruments sale on November 16 in London. High points of the sale, included a Nicolò Amati violin dated 1676, which sold for £52,448 ($75,000). Also of note was a Eugène Sartory silver-mounted violin bow (circa 1900; weight 60 grams), with an ebony frog with silver rings, pearl eye, and a silver overlaid adjuster, which sold for £5,455 ($7,800). And a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume cello dated 1798, with a back length of 2913/16 inches, sold for £63,986 ($91,500). Sotheby’s also held its inaugural sale of musical instruments targeted specifically at music students and enthusiastic amateurs on December 7. The Billinghurst sale featured 137 violins; all entries were estimated under $2,000. "This type of sale is extremely exciting," said Tim Ingles, head of Sotheby’s Musical Instruments department in London. "It not only emphasizes the accessibility and affordability of musical instruments, but offers younger enthusiasts the opportunity to obtain a feel for the auction market." Only one lot made over £3,000 ($2,308), but 90 percent of the lots sold. "There is clearly a strong market out there for reasonably priced instruments in this range," said Ingles. "We look forward to doing it again next year." Tarisio, the Internet-based auction house, celebrated its third sale on December 1. The auction made a total of $1,618,654 (225 lots—79 percent of the total lots offered—were sold). The buyer’s premium was set at ten percent, and the sale was previewed in Boston, as well as Chicago. High sales included a fine and rare Italian viola by Giovanni and Francesco Grancino, circa 1680, which sold for $286,000. A fine French cello in "perfect" condition by Gand and Bernardel (length 301/8 inches, dated 1879) sold for $54,450. Upcoming Auctions Upcoming spring sales include an early sale at Bonhams & Brooks, Febuary 14, 2001. Christie’s next London sale is March 21, and an additional sale will be in New York on May 4. Tarisio will share exhibition space with Christie’s May sale in preparation for its May 4–11 sale. Philips is planning spring sales on both February 12 and March 19 in London. Skinner is set for an auction on May 6.
