Auction Highlights

The June 19 sale in London hosted by Bonhams & Brooks showcased a very interesting cello lot. A fine Italian cello by Francesco Ruggieri, previously noted as property of a lady and made in Cremona, c. 1685, raised £105,000 ($147,000) at hammer—nearly £25,000 over the high estimate; $35,000. Also, a four-stringed English bass by Cold of Manchester (c. 1880) sold for £11,000 ($15,400).

Christie’s auction, held June 18 in South Kensington, took a number of high bids, notably, a good modern violin by Italian maker, Vincenzo Sannino. The instrument brought in £28,200 ($39,480). A French silver-mounted bow by Joseph Henry, featuring a pearl eye and silver and ebony adjuster, garnered £12,925 ($18,095).

The highest sale at Phillips’ June 18 sale at New Bond Street, London, was a fine and handsome Italian violin by David Tecchler (Rome, c. 1710). The instrument sold with a certificate from J. & A. Beare and was described as a "fair and characteristic example of the maker’s work." It brought £26,000 ($36,400). Also, a silver-mounted E. Sartory violin bow, with a high estimate of £4,000, brought £4,900 ($6,860) at close. Sale prices do not include Buyer’s Premium.

Sotheby’s June 19 auction in London, showcased a violin by Antonio Stradivari (Cremona, c. 1680). The instrument netted an impressive £278,500 ($389,900) and had provenance with the leader of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Deserving of note, an E. Sartory silver-mounted violin bow (Paris, c. 1895) sold for £6,600 ($9,240).

Tarisio experienced several exceptional sales in its May 5 auction. A fine and important Cremonese violin by Nicolo Amati (1647) brought $187,000 in final bidding. And a fine Italian violin by Annibale Fagnola (1926), estimated at $45,000–65,000, sold for $71,500 at gavel.

Note: All prices in the listings include the buyer's premium.
