Living in Alto Clefs
11 Top Players Pick the Best Loved, and Most Overlooked, Viola Works of All Time
By Heather K. Scott

Inside "Living in Alto Clefs" . . .
Searching for good solo viola repertoire may sometimes feel like looking for a vegetarian at a Texas barbeque. It’s true; the viola is often overlooked by composers when it comes to creating good solo music. As a result, alto-clef players frequently have difficulty tracking down compositions that speak to them—musical jewels that are simultaneously beautiful, engaging, and challenging.

To help uncover these hidden gems, we queried eleven well known violists and asked them to share their all-time favorite viola work, as well as a beloved unknown or overlooked piece. The resulting collection from these accomplished violists includes some music that you’ll undoubtedly recognize . . . but may introduce you to some lesser-known works as well.

A Mozart Masterwork
A viola quintet that occupies a special position among the composer’s works
By Edith Eisler

Inside "A Mozart Masterwork" . . .

Mozart, one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, was also an accomplished violinist (he called himself the best in the world!), but his favorite stringed instrument was the viola. When in informal quartet sessions with partners like Haydn and Dittersdorf and all three claimed the viola part, it was Mozart who won.

His Sinfonia concertante, K. 364, for violin and viola was ground-breaking for the viola as a solo instrument, but it is in his six string quintets that he really declared his love with some of the warmest, most luxurious viola parts ever written before or since. The quintets are among the greatest works in the chamber music literature, a joy for the listener, pure bliss for the players.
